Suction D&C

Suction dilation and curettage commonly referred to as Suction D&C, is a procedure in which contents from the inside of the uterus are removed. “Dilation” refers to the opening of the cervix and “curettage” refers to the aspiration or removal of tissue within the uterus. This procedure is commonly performed as a treatment for miscarriage or retained placenta after vaginal delivery. Minimal discomfort may be felt after words. What to Expect During the Procedure

A suction D&C is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning most patients go home the same day. Before the procedure, your provider will explain what to expect, answer your questions, and discuss comfort options.

During the procedure, the cervix is gently opened, and a thin suction instrument is used to remove tissue from the uterus. Cleveland Clinic describes D&C as a procedure that removes tissue from the uterus and notes that patients may have it for diagnosis, treatment, or after incomplete miscarriage.

Afterward, you may experience temporary cramping, light bleeding, spotting, or fatigue. Your provider will give you personalized aftercare instructions and let you know what symptoms to watch for.
