Endometrial ablation is a procedure that surgically destroys (ablates) the lining of your uterus (endometrium). The goal of endometrial ablation is to reduce menstrual flow. In some women, menstrual flow may stop completely.
No incisions are needed for endometrial ablation. Your doctor inserts slender tools through the passageway between your vagina and uterus (cervix).

The below three endometrial ablation treatment options are uterus-preserving procedures used to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding in premenopausal patients with benign causes of bleeding who are finished having children. The main difference is the technology: NovaSure and Minerva use radiofrequency energy, while Genesys HTA uses heated saline with hysteroscopic visualization. Minerva Endometrial Ablation is an in-office gynecologic procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to remove or destroy the uterine lining to help reduce heavy periods.
Uses radiofrequency energy through a thin device placed inside the uterus to treat the uterine lining. Hologic describes NovaSure as a one-time procedure designed to reduce or stop heavy menstrual bleeding.

About the Procedure
Endometrial Ablation is an in-office gynecologic procedure to remove or destroy the uterine lining to help reduce heavy periods.
After endometrial ablation, you might experience:
- Cramps. You may have menstrual-like cramps for a few days. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help relieve cramping.
- Vaginal discharge. A watery discharge, mixed with blood, may occur for a few weeks. The discharge is typically heaviest for the first few days after the procedure.
- Frequent urination. You may need to pass urine more often during the first 24 hours after endometrial ablation.
